Music Based Programming
Music Based Programming is a compilation of music into a playlist that will be played during the show on the radio station. Depending on the type of radio station, most of the shows featuring on the station will play same genre of music and songs that are available to that radio stations. Usually the presenters will create their own playlists that would be suitable to their show and their audience, taking the songs from radio station's ABC playlists. During this process the presenter uses different techniques and decides what song should be an opener to the show and what song should close it, usually strong songs that are popular enough would be used; what songs should be played in a segue and also when. The presenter also puts all the features that will be on the show in the specific order as it is important to make the show more entertaining, so the audience would continue to listen to the show.
For Radio 1 Breakfast show with Nick Grimshaw the main audience would be between ages of 20-29 who is most likely has a full time job. The music that is played, mostly the popular songs from pop, dance, RnB, hip-hop genres, suits this audience as well and meets audiences needs. The show is mostly includes everything that is appealing to their target audience. It can be some live interviews with an actor who was in a film that was recently released and has the same target audience as the radio show.
Radio 3 Essential Classics Music in the Great War: Rob Cowan with Jay Winter on the other hand has complete opposite target audience. The show and radio station aims mostly at the older generation who likes classical music. The music that is played is classical from various composers it might even be from a recent ones. As their target audience is completely different from radio 1's, radio 3 will not be doing the interviews with the actors that were recent film as it would not be appealing to their target audience and they will only loose their audience.
The internet radio is very popular, ranging from iTunes radio, Spotify Radio and any other that can be found on some websites as a feature; it can have various audiences and they usually play music only. The playlists sometimes can be created by the listener to match his/her music needs. It is very beneficial as with today's technology this type of radio can be listened on a smartphone almost anywhere.
The in-store radio mostly used to appeal to their customers. They usually use mainstream songs in a playlists to make the customer feel relaxed and in a happy mood so he/she would most likely be wanting to stay around the shop and buy their products. Topshop, Asda, Co-op they all have the in-store radio stations. The music that they play usually is Pop music or RnB. The songs that they use would be the ones that are popular at the time and it will also depend on their target audience (what products they sell, and what their customers' age that come in to the shop).
